The Pacific Mail liner Persia, says the China Press," Shanghui, of Sept. 1,

which arrived from Hougkong yesterday oring, a day inte, aral sailed in the afternoon for San Francisco via Japan and Honolulu. ran through the middle of the typhoon which the offers of the ship, say covered the largest area of any thing of the kind they had evet en countered before. The steamer left Hongkong about 1 o'clock last Tuesday alternoon and thirty-six hours later en- tered the typhoon ares. Everything was mnde ready for the big blow and the ship came through it without loss or damage. The vessel was in the worst of it, during the night and the passengers kept to their bunks, avoiding any rough experiences, although one Japanese lost a anger, which was crushed by the slamming of a door While the steamer was passing through

the dead calm in the centre typhoon_a large flock of birds, to the number of about a hundred and fifty, flew aboard and nested in the life boats, where they were fed by passengers and members of the crew. They remained on the ship nearly twenty-four hours.
