-DROWNING. FATALITIES.

Two drowning fatalities occurred on Sunday while a third would probably have been recorded had it not been for the good offices of Dr Kew, dentist. It appears that about 1 o'clock Dr Kew and his brother were walking past Bowrington Caral on their way to their yacht when they saw a gret emed of Chinese assembled at the Ride of the canal. On going to ascertain the cause of the trouble the brother; Kew saw two boys, who on dast sight appear-

Second Health Officer of the Phat, was in the vicinity and rendered medical assistance bat although he attended the child for up- wards of an hour and a half the poor little inite could not be revived.

THE SHIPPING RING.

LONDON, June 3.

Bir John Anderson, Governor of the -Straits Settlemonte, in conference with shipowners representing the Shipping Ring, has successfully negotiated a settlement.

It entails the ending, on December 31 1911, of the special agreement with the big merchants under which they receive'what is known as the secret rebate," but all rebates in respect of cargoes shipped meanwhile wil be paid, whether the shipper continues to support the conference or not.

Thereafter, the agreement entered into will be subject to triennial revision, but at the end of every three years, rohates on argo abipped during the triennial period will be paid similarly to those during the currant ypat, so that shippers will not lose even if they leave the Conference.

The Straits Freight and Steamships Ordinance will, in consequence of this agreement, by repealed,
