CHINESE Y.M.C.A.

The WaT Fat Po has a very interest- ing and appreciativasticio upon the doings and aspirations of the Chinese Y.M.C.A. in Canton. According to our contemporary the object of the Association in the develip. ment and culture of "virtue, "wisdom" and athletics." These objects naturally appeal to all lover of men, and no dia- tinctions of raes or colour can lessen the

importance of the development thereof among soy people. The writer then goes i on to say that these Associations are es thick as trees in America and in England. { He then refers to the splendid building in Shanghai and to certain proposed buildings which are to be immediately erected in Tontin and Peking. The Associacion in Canton, whose membership numbers mora than six hundred, are anxicus that thero ahould be a building in Canton which should be equal to the needs of the work, and steps are being taken to build auch home for the workers. A piece of land has been purchased on the new bund, which is admirably suited for this object. Accord- ing to our contemporary the price of this plot of lind is more than sixty thousand dollars. Fortuzately for the possibilition of the scheme, samo friends in America have subscribed one hundred and ten thousand dollars. This is a good nest egg. But more fands are needed in order that a more com- dions building may be erected, and all the apparatus applied for effective teaching, which will, when the building is completed, comprise a liberal education. The trusteta and promptera of the scheme bave there- fore- appealed to the Chinese public, and have stated that the Consul Genoml for the „United States in Canton will · ·receive subscriptions on behalf of the scheme. What respouse will follow this appest ro mains to be seen. It should be mentioned that, whilst in the style of English and American Associations, the word Christian" is conspicuous, was understand that références and advertisements in Chinese often refer to the organization aimp'y as Young Men's Association. Tharo ay be little or nothing in this omission, for What's in a name? It Im likely, however, that the Association, with out the distinctive word. ! Christian" in conspicuous prominence will win the scp- port of more non-Chinese then if the nasa were emphasized. The project is reported to be in able tunda.
