In the Summons Division of the Water Polica Curt, Sydney, Peter Thomson Helms, passter of the steamer Empire, was proceeded against by the Customs Dopert ment for having on board when the venus) arrived at Sydney, a Chinese stowaway. . A les of guilty was entered on behalf of the defendant. It was stated that on the arrival of the Empire from Hongkong a Chimaman was found learing the Tomel. Inquiries elicited the fact that he was a atowaway. The company went to con siderable expense in having photographs taken of the crew, and it was by this means that he was proved to be a stowaway. Every assistance was given the authorities by the E. and A. Company, Captain Green, superintendent of the company, stated that though the vessel, was searched several tires for stowaways, the Chinaman escaped detection. A fine of £100 wa
