A few weeks ago, it will bo remembered, a disturbance occurred on board one of the dredgers employed in the Conservancy works at Gough Island which ended in 'oro" of the participants finding himself in the river, from which he was jest rescued in the nick of time. The incident, we nu- derstand, was adjusted by his usudilant sovering his connexion with the Dutch contineturs, and there is might have ban presumed that the matter would have restal. Unfortunately, however, there scoms to have been more behind the fight on too dredger than a persorial quarrel, and when the Board's employes sabse quently put himself in the wrong by refusing to obey the orders of one of his superiors, an opportunity presented itself to Mr Ka Hang-ming to inquire into the whole point at issue between the contractors and the Board's employees. The result of those investigations, it is to be feared, mill bo proceedings in the Dutch Coi Court Meanwhile Viceroy Than Fang on hearing of the trouble, appointed a commissier, consisting of the Shangbai Tantai, Mr. E. Hobson, Commissioner of Custores, Mr Ku Hung-ming and another, so examine the various allegations mado byingapore August 10, Goral---SANDED, the Cuatractors and the Baird's employees against one other. Only one meeting of this Commission has beer hold, and its delibomations were abortive owing to a lifference of opinion between the Taokai and Mr Ka Hung-wing The subject is essentially one for cool, dispassionate in vestigation, and it is to be hoped that this will be forthcoming when the case is brought before the Datch Court iramediate
It is by after the Consul-General's return. hardly necessary to paint out that a disputo of this nature cannot affect the principle of conservancy work which must proceed whether the Contractors' employees or the Board's employees are at fault. Home blan would suct to attach to the person ressible from the break up of the first "necting of the Viceroy's commission.-
