NANNING.

(From Our Correspondent.)

NANNING, April 16, It was not till the 17th of last month that Nunning was formally opencă ne a Fort. The Commissioner and his staff were mot by the Officials in their state robes; refreshments were provided, and and salutes, the dofing of hats and the firing of crackers the flag was ceremonially bolted on the staff. Trado, however, has been very slack, partly owing to the season of the year and the low water in the river, and also to some provisional Customs' regulations which frightened the Chinese merchants and made them holl back their goods for export.

As 60 per cent of the commerce, handled at Wuchow, comes from or Brengh Nanning, and among Foreign merchants the English companies have

far practically had monopoly of the Web River it is to be hoped that under new and changing conditions, British trade will remain predominant. There are howevor, freak difficulties and drogors" that haro, to be faced forewarned though is tú formed! It has not yet been officially abnounced as to a British consul coving to Nanning to reside. This is not a Tresty Port in the ordinary sense. It 148 decinrad open" eight years ago by the Chinese voluntarily and they are thus able to place restrictions of their own on foreign trade, the "Concessions" aro let out at rentals up to 860's "Mo" arear acording to the site, and the whole is to be superintended by a Chiness overseet, for whom a big house costing $11,000 in being built in the contre of the ground.

Many of the houses destroyed in the big fire have been rebuilt. The guilds came to the rescue with loans, and to the very poor suferers the Taotai gave a liberal donation. The French Brothers of the Roman Catholic Mission in addition to teaching Fronch have opened an English school and
