Professor Elis Motehniko, of the Pasteur Institute, Paris, contributes an interesting and thoughtful article, entitled "Studles of Natural Death," to the January number of Harper's Magazine As he points out at the start, most perenns will be astonished to ascertain how little knowledge scionco cxa really bosst with Terpect to the problem of death. Whereas in religions, philosophies, literature, sud: popular traditions the question of death occupies a notably prep ndamat place, in scientific works it has been accorded but limited consideration. M. Metchnikut,. himself, for instance, favours a theory: that in old ago death may become an in- atinet, in mach the same way as a desire for life. Flo adds:-

"The idea that this instinct of natural death is in all probability accompanied by as penceable and pleasant a remeation ne can be conceived will still further increase Ita beneficent effect upon humanity.
