THE MARINE COURT AT HONGKONG,

The Merchant Service Guild have lately been in communication with the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the subject of prosecutions in the Marine Court at Hong- kong, the Harbour Master, the Hou, L. A. W. Barnes Lawrence, R.N., noting as the Magistrate of the Court. The case which the Guild particularly alluded was that of the prosecution of a shipmaster for alleged obstruction on the high ass and wilful disregard of the Rules of the Rosd The facts, as stated in the judgment of the Harbour Master, were that the master of the steamer temporarily left the vicinity of the wheel and left the direction of affaire in the hands of the pilot. Owing to the latter's alteration of the course a collision with another vessel encued. The Harbour Master stated that he did not know how far the pilot took charge in the coastal runs, but in no-wise was the master Absolved from responsibility in the event of an accident, and he was fined 100 dollars, or in default, fourteen days, im, prisonment.

The Guild, in taking serious exception to this judgment, said that an undoubted iu- justice had been committed, and that the decision of the Barbour Master was bad, 1376not only morally, but from a lawful stand- point. They said that a master could not always be in the vicinity of the wheel, and, in absence, it was perfectly proper and seamanlıku to leave the supervision of the steering to the pilot. Further, the Guild "desired to know under what statutes's Court such as that at Hongkong was constituted, as they were not aware of others of the kind olsewhere. Also, mention was made Foreign Affairs, after representations of the Guild, had caused a despatch to be sent to Shanghai that in any case in the High Court Affecting merchant vessels, there should be at least one merchant captain as-

A hand to mouth business has been done from Saigon to this, the few steamers own- ed by Chinese plying regularly between that port and ours, picking up what cargo they can get on basis of 13 conts per picul rice. Shipments of new grain will not be effected until wo'l into February and it is still rather prematuro to form a reliablo opinion upon the yield of the new trop; but it is generally believed, that previous reports as to the effect of the inundations. have been exaggerated and that a fair aver- age crop may be looked for.

From Saigon to Philipp. ports, several freal settlements are on record at slightly lower rates viz 29/30 cents per picul; somo further enquiry exists and may possibly be filled by a boat or two seeking employment to page over the temporary slack period..

Salgon/Jaya, no fresh business reported, are likely to be resumed but oporations about second half of February though, as to opening rates, nothing definite can be &Rid

Saigon Japin, a steamer has been done,

to kad immediately after the Chinese New Year at 43 cents per picul, a fairly good rate under the circumstances, but for later lélivery tonnago cannot be had on same basis,

Anent Bangkok business, there is no change whatever to report, the new crops produce being not available for shipment until the latter port of next month

From Java to this, a fixture is reported, dry and/or wet sugar, lump sum equal to about 34 cents per picul.

Advices from the North still remain very good and indicate that a resumption of the activity of last few months, and at good rates, may be expected after the New Year has passed. TRADE MARK.

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports.

All

the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails ugually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28;or 30 days.

Coal freight from Japan ports to this have continued to follow a downward tendency, principally in consequence of several ready steamers wanting to find their way down South. Business has been done at $1.80 per ton, Moji to this, prompt loading, but it is not likely that more tonnage.can be had at that figure for forward delivery, Charter has been put Moji/Saigon, a through t 33 per ton. Sa family medicine Bile Beans stand out prominently amongst the many remedies in use at the present time. They are the product of the most modern scientific research, and embody essences, which science, has, discovered as valuable health restorers, not contained in medicines dating A case of back half a century or more. extraordinary interest in which this great specific has once more proved triumphant is that of Mrs Turner, her daughter and son, living at Moorgate, Retford, England, who were all cured of debility. Mra Turner Bays ----

For a long time I suffered so from de- bility that it was with difficulty I moved about. I had a constant feeling of heavi ness at the stomach, and do what I would I could not got rid of it. My breathing was laboured, and caused great pain Many a time, when outside I had actually to stand still in order to get my breath, so bad had I become. One day a neighbour gave me a few Bile Beans to see if they would do me any good. I thought they From the did, and so I purchased some. time I began to take them I have gra dually improved, until now I am quite well again. The Annual Genoral Meeting of tho Society will be held in the City Hall on Tuesday, February 7, at 8.00 pm, when any further information concerning the scheme referred to above will be gladly given.

All who are interested in the general work of the Society and in this roars ate, particular are invited to attend.Yours etc,
