Engineering, discussing the various sys- tems of remunerating labour, contends that TIVERY Mail brings us orders for Dr J. there is a need for some mutual arrange-E DYKE BALL'S Now Book, sotitled ment wherchy waste in the workshop, whether it be of time or materials, shall be averted, or, if that be impossible, minimis. ed. That there are men who will shirk their duty, whenever possible, goes without Haying. All men of experience know that such is the case, and no ono is hardy enough to defend it. In the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, in the Boiler-Makers' and Iron Shipbuilders' Society, and other trades-steps have been taken to get rid of malingerers; but the men dealt with are those only who rub the Society and their brother-members by being on the funds when work is available, if the man is industrious enough to seek it, and sober enough to retain it when obtained. That is, of course, just the class of mun most likely to shirk an honest fair day's work when employed; but it is to be feared that there are others, though not so bad, who do not throw themselves into their work as they ought to do on the principle of a fair day's work for a fair day's wage. They may not be actuated by malice afore thought, but they are naturally indolent. If they have any energy at all, it is ex- pended in sports and pastimes. Several dovicos have been tried to induce work- men to do their love! best during working hours, and some success has attended these Profit-sharing and industrial efforts. partnerships have been tried on a large scale, with excellent results. But a large section of employers do not care to try any of these system. The bonus system acoms to many a possible solution of the problem. The Engineers, it seems, have consented to adopt it, and they resent any attempt to abolish it. It must be understood that the Amalgamated Society does not belong to the Engineering and Shipbuilding Trades

Federation, whose condemnation of the system was published last week. Some of the labour leaders vigorously protest That against it, others are more guarded.

there may be defects in the system may be conceded; but what is wanted is that each workman shall honestly do his part to earn his wages, and that, at the same time, the speedier and better workman shall reap the reward of his superior skill and his more usrnest industry. The Taui Yuen firm, bankera of Canton, proceeded against Chan That to recover money lent under a Chinese document. Mr Otto Kong Sing appeared for the plaintiff. and Mr R. A. Harding for the defendant.

The Outdoor Superintendent of the com- plainant's firm stated that on July 8 the defendant borrowed $150 from the bank and signed a Chinese document promising payment.

He hoped that there would never be a conflict between Great Britian and Russia, but as the responsible trustees of the safety of the Empire they had to regard military facts.

His Honour upheld the objection and the plaintiffs were nun-suited,

VICTORIA RECREATION CLUB REGATTA.

To the Editor of the "CHINA MAIL.' SIRI have just had an opportunity of seeing a programme of the forthcoming regatts, which announces that out of thirteen races five are open to clubs other than the V.R.O., under certain conditions. The condition to which I wish to call atten- tion more particularly is attached to each of the five open races, and is that the race is to be rowed in boats the property of the competing club or unit. Which means, that any olub possessing a superior racing boat would have an immense advantage. INTER PORT CRICKET.

Victory for the Straits,

Beaten by 62 Rans. The second day of the Shanghai Straits match was favoured by excellent clear weather. The sun shone brightly and there was a cool breeze blowing, which wafted the smoke from the naval yard away from the Cricket Ground, and thereby earn. ed the gratitude of players and spectators alike. The grass on the playing area was beginning to lose its vivid green tint and in patches was wearing brown and looking parched. Midway between the wicket and the southern boundary there was a small circular oasit, much greener in colour than any other portion of the ground. It was here that the water pipe for hosing the ground showed itself, and to that was due the brightness of the little patch.

were required. Still they had to reckon against the bowling of the Straits, which in their last innings had wrought havoc with their batamen. The spectators on the ground numbered about 250, of whom

about 20 were ladies

Parkes and Lanning were the opening batsmen and disaster at once struck Bhang hal. Lanning was bowled by Rees first bill, and the first wicket was down for one.

W. H. Moule went in and acored a single. Parkeaplaced Resatoleg for four, and Wy went on to howl at the eastern end, being cat by Moule for four. After a single, Parkes cut the same bowl r for four. When 15 runs had been scored Moule was out log before wicket to Wyatt. The Northernus had made a poor start, two wickets beleg down for 15.

Der joined Parkes, made a single and then faced Rees, whom he lifted into the pavilion at the South-Eastern corner of the ground. Singles carried! the score to 25 when Parkes at tempted to emulate Moule by lifting Reen to leg. Parkes was fielding there and made an easy catch. Three for 25.

Five byos increased the score, and Barrett cut Lanning for a single, brinsing the total to . Bradbery scored his first run of the day by driving Lanting to the off. He then out Potter for another single, a stroke which Barroit repented. The firs

round of applause was accorded to Bradbery for pulling Potter to leg for four. Barrett equalled his score in the first innings by driving Lanning for one which Arthur (the umpire) fielded. Steady play followed until Barrett brought the total to 100, by a fine dive to the on boundary, amid applause. Both men wore playing steady cricket, Bradbery, in particular, being extremely careful. Barrett was driving hard and cutting well, and both men looked Ret. The next ball, however, saw Barrett dismissed. Potter sent one down just on the leg side, and Barrett played a straight bar to it. The ball struck the bat near the handle and flew aloft, descending into T. Wallace's hands. The partnership had put on 98 runs, of which Barrett had made 49. Three
