Of course? Didn't England pay for the mischief done by the Alabama ? and why?: Because we allowed a British ship to be sold during war time to the Americans to be fitted out as a warship or privateer. The same thing has happened now."
Plausible enough, of course, and evidently our informant has picked up the idea from British official sources. If Germany has to pay the piper, it will be, a pretty go, indeed;

The following table is a chronologically arranged list of mail steamer sailings to Europe, America, Canada, and Australia. Coast ports, Manila, and Japan are not given, for steamers are constantly sailing for those ports. the American steamers call at Japan, and the majority of the Australian boats call at Manila, and, in addition to those vessels, special steamers run there. The departure of every steamer is subject to alteration. The P. & O. mails usually reach London in about 28 days, and the French and German in about 28 or 30 days.

Baffled Correspondents. Captain Lionel James and Mr Lewis, two of the leading war correspondents on the Japanese side, turned up at Shan- haikwan recently by the Newchwang train. Capt. James wore a beard that would have done credit to Moses after his prolonged sojourn in the wilderness, save only that it had a very Anglo-Saxon auburn hue, Tho two correspondents had just come down from Liaoyang. It seems scarcely credible, but it is the astonishing fact, that though within 15 miles of the scene of one of the greatest battles of modern times they were not allowed to see anything whatever of the fighting!-China Times.

A match like that played on Saturday was ed Mr Badeley and Mr Hallifax for their N
regrettable. The Captains on both sides were perhaps the worst offenders.
A rather amusing incident-to the specta- tors-happened just before the commence- ment of the Toam race. Two of the officials, Measra E. M. Hazeland and A. Humphreys wore standing on the staging at the end of the bath when, it collapsed, precipitating them into the water. A hearty roar of laughter rose as the two Committee-men came to the surface, and the mirth increas od as they endeavoured to struggle into a boat lying handy.
That this year's aquatic sports were the best ever held in the Club is the general opinion; notwithstanding the Water Polo final.
The Honorary Secretary, Mr H. C. Auston, worked hard to ensure success, and in this he was worthily upheld by his able Committee, who devoted considerable time and energy to the directing of affairs. The Steward of the Club, Mr C. Lesbirel, was also to the fore, and although the atton- dances eclipsed anything in the past, the accommodation was ample.
The results of Saturday's racing were as followings –
