THE FLEET AT SHANGHAI,
Taking advantage of the fact that the British men-of-war Albion, Gory, Ven geance, Centurion, Leviathan, Amphitrite, Eclipse and Whiting were at Woosung the British public of Shanghai arranged a wel come to the men of the Fleet. The men landed from lighters and to the number of about 700 they marched up to the Town Hall, where a fine dinner was provided them.
Mr F. Anderson welcomed the mon on behalf of the British community. They regarded the British navy, ho said, as one of
the most powerful factors making for the
+
peace of the whole world. Confidence in the British Navy had been growing for con- turies-confidence not only in its ships and guns, but in the men behind the guns. He regretted that they had been able to do so little for the Navy, but he hoped shortly to see a recreation ground completed for the use of the navy.
Commander Hopwood, of H M.S. Mory replied on behalf of the Navy, and thank- ad them for the entertainmont provided.
