THE WAR IN MAINE.

Us folks down to Maine ain't bothered With the style of words that's printed All about the shooting matches

Over yonder where the Russians

And the Japanese are fighting.

We don't care for little, easy Words like Saracharifuto, Hakodate, Ishakari,

Tsugaruki and the others,

Done in consonants and sneezes,

Fits and spasms and contortions,

We don't give a continental

For the Russian-Japanensy

Style of language in the papers,

For we've got some Maine jawbreakers

That we guess are rather something

In the line of nomenclature.

For instance, now, suppose you tackle Molochunkemunk and Schooxic, Eggenmoggin and Pejopscot, Moosetoomogantic and Kealscus. What's the matter with their ensure

Ain't they equal to the lingo

Of the Muscovite and Mongol ?

Still, if you think that they are mild ones. Chernquasabemticook and Sqps Fan,

Wytopitlock and Cupsuptic,

Mnewaboo and Pattagempus

May be found to make it plainer

To you that in Maine our language

Beats the Russo-Japaneasy

To a pulp from start to finish,

These we mention, just in passing,

the many

Are but fow among

That wo give our towns--and rivers, Lakes and mountains- and wo's ready,

If the Muscovite und. Mongol

Shoot their language all to pieces.

To supply them with some samples

To replace their present twisters.

That will make them pause and wonder.

LONDON, May 26. The Standard publishes the following from a well-informed Russian correspond- ent, undated, 'It is rumoured that after the recent disturbances in Warsaw, aix hundred persons were hanged by an

administrative order, without trials ; there have been similar executions in Kronstadt, while in Moscow, eighty coffins have been seen leaving the City at the dead of night escorted by troops.' The correspondent gives the most gloomy account of the effects of the war in commercial and agricultural life; moreover forecasts indicate poor crops.

A STUBBORN BATTLE. ·

Mr M. Noma, the Japanese Consul, has forwarded to us the following copy of a telegram received by him last night :----

Tokio, May 27, 3.45 p.nu.

Will History Be Repeated? It is reported from the North that there is great panic amongst the people still left in the city and environs of Moukden, owing to a rumur spread by the Russians there that the moment the Japanese forces come near Liyang the Russians intend to set fire both to that city and to Moukden and then retreat to Harbin. In consequence of this all who are able to leave Moukden are doing so to seek safety elsewhere.
