Their amaz- ing fitness' was a new phenomenon in soldiering, and it is this which makes us well-wishers of Japan so hopeful as to the 359 outcome of the war with Russia. It is certainly a fact that, from the point of view of physical prows and endurance, the in- dividual Cossack simply has no chance with the individual Jap.”

SUI SANG,

Why, in spite of their small stature, the Japaneso are probably the most physically fit nation on earth, Mr H. Irving Hancock explains in his interesting little volume on 628 Japanese Physical Training (G. P. Putnam'a

Sons, бs. net). Most of us have heard of the Japanese science of ju-jitsu, or, as Mr Hancock spells it, jiu-jitsu, and most of us associate the words with a species of trick. ery which will enable a five-foot Jap to vanquish Hackenschmidt in half a minute. 628 and to knock Madralli about like a ninepin.

Jin-jitsu is, of course, as far removed from the Western notion of combat as most Eastern notions are from Western notions. Blows play a small port in the science, which is just as well when that trained men can break your spine with remember

science takes account of are always do- livered with the edge of the hand never with the fist; it is only one of maug in- stances that the science is one of knack and nicety rather than of brute strength. It is as Mr Hancock remarks, a principle of jiu-jitsu that weaker man should be able to attack a stronger opponent and to defeat him by the aid of the latter's own greater strength, Jiu jitsu is, in point of fact, more a matter of grip than of impact. took place at Tokio in which the champion wrestler of Japan was put on his back in fifteen seconds by a votary of jiu jitsu, the art of wrestling has fallen into decadence Japanese wrestlers were always tall men; and generally fat. They were destined for the profession from their cradle, the like. lient babies being chosen for the purpose. The reason why wrestling has, in spite of its inferiority, fasted so long is that till the time of the revolution in Japan jiu-jitau was the prerogative of the samurai, or aristocratic caste, and its secrets were kept under oath. Now that jiu-jitsu can be taught to everyone, even to foreigners, the old style of wrestling, once the popular amusement, is fast dying out.

*THE HEALTHIEST OF HUMAN CREATURES.'

It may be imagined that so exciting and dangerous and art as jiu-jitsu is bound to have had physical consequences. So it has→ for the opponent; but the Jap himself

is the healthiest of human creatures. The whole scienco is based on careful diet and punctilious cleanliness. The Japanese soldier is taught to broathe properly with as much care as if he wore a professional tenor, and at the least sign of undue palpitation of the heart he is ordered to cease his exercise and lie down on his back to recover. In the course

of the five years' training heart and lungs affection become so strongthened that any of these organs is almost unknow in Japan. As for nerves, the Japanese do not know what they are. Mr. Hancock calls them the calmnest, coolest, happiest, braveet, and strongest people in the world.' In that Arcadia weaknees or long illness are cou- sidered to be the misfortunes of only the very aged.'

And now Dai Nippon is stripping for the struggle with the big wrestler scross the water. Maybe we shall have an exhibition of international jiu-jitsu before long James's Bridget.

THE NEW AFRIKANDEH

All thinkers are agreed that the ultimate destiny of this continent is rangnirent. They differ in opinion in respect of its transitory changes, not its final form. That the Dutch and British elements here will eventually merge into one virile race, strengthened by streams of blood from the most energetic races of other countries, may be confidently predicted; and the afrikander of the future should be-nay, it is safe to say will be-a grand specimen of the Jenis man.

The world has seen with admiration, not anmixed with dismay, the marvellous energy evolved by the fasion of races, in America. Here, in South Africa, in the years to come, we shall witness the same thing repeated on a vasily larger scale, with the added advantage of the experience of the Americans to guide us, whose errors we hope to avoid while striving to repeat their success.

At the close of their long and devastating war, the Americans awoke to the grand poa- sibilities of their country, and proceeded to develop them with admirable skill and indus ry. But even the best of virtus have their darker side, and their feverish haste to achieve material success the Americans denied themselves time for eating; with te result that they came a pation of dyspept cs, a fact which has port them untold misery and countless dollars. The evil is better and rstood and more generally avoided by Americans now; and besides, their scientific

rese-rch bus provided an antidote in Mother Beigel's Curative Syrup.

L

That our people for years past have been subject to the same sert of danger, the ex perience of Mr A. Doset, of C-rendou Crescent, Richmoud Hill, Port Elizabeth, will prove Writing on the 19th September, 1909, to Messrs A. J. White (olonial) Ltd., corner of Princes pe Colony and Diesel Stree's, Port Eliz-beth C (propri-tors in South Africa of Mother Seigel's | Curative Syrup), M- Donet says: Twenty- five years ago, when I was a young son. I had a very serious illness. My liver was singgish, and I suffered from cute indication. For days together I was formented by excruciating pains all over my body, but more particularly in my stomach, slondes, and back Sometimes the symptoms would chenga, «nd I would almost faint or fall as op even when walking auldoorn. My legs seemed to give wy, and I felt that In this they were too weak to suppert ine. way I suffered for many months. Dortor after doctor attended me, but a ton of them seemed to know what was the matter, and it is cer siu that I derived no benefit from their me licines.

Al leat. I began to think that I s ould never get relief in thi world, when my fa her ad i-ed me to try Sigel's Syrup. It is a safe and certain remedy for much of the trouble you are sutle ing from,' said he and if it does you no god, I don't think it can possibly make yon worse than you are -I was now desperate, and being ten anxious to try anything which toʻght do god I obtained a bottle of the Syrup and egan to take it. Its beficial effect was almost im- mediately a parent, and after I had taken it for a week I felt considerably bitter. I con- tinged to take the medi ine, and by the time I had finished the second bottle I was quite well. Indigestion, giddiness, drowsiness, and pains all di-appeared, and I could find some pleasure in life avain. From that day to this I have be na flm believer in the curative power of Mother Seigel's Syrup, and am careful never to be without a sap: ly of it in my house; for not only is it a sure curs for indigestion, bat us

a regulator of the system and purifier of the blood it has no qual.'

After war, depression; after depression, revival and progress. The outlook for our country is goud-worthy of the great race now being evolved.
