bough at present there is not quite an -ounce in the market, but Sir William Ramsay tells an astonishing story of a firm working at uranium ore, and in the course of their experiments dump- ing quantities of radium into the dustbin, of course in very excusable ignorance of its pripeless properties and the mysterious Alpha, Beta and Gamma rays. A scientist at Nancy gives the name of N-rays to irradiations from the human body, sufficiently powerful to penetrate aluminium,
By a crushing majority of 22 to 4 the Transvaal Legislative Council has ap proved of the introduction of Chinese labour on the Kand. The mines want it and cannot, they say, possibly pay without it. Speculators in the jungle here want it, for you cannot play bull and bear for ever with stocks that yield no dividends, and now Louis Botha, its representative opponent, admits that the Boers want it too, to release the Kafir for their agricultural work. It is only remarkable, in all these circum. stances, that they should be willing to
begin with so small a consignment as the ten thousand they name as the first trial order. Bat after all, Mrs Glasse's advice applies to other matters besides the cooking of hares.
This is the season of influenza, and a handsome reward awaits the man who shall discover an officient preventative or remedy for the scourge. A well- known Hongkong medico who made a deep study of the disease, told me in eigh- teen ninety-six the best remedy. Here it is. Go to bed. There get drunk on Scotch Wisky. Stay in bed and stay drunk till the influenza has departed. The cure is absolutely indisputable, and any who may have died under the treat- ment have died cured.
THE TIEN-TSIN MAILS.
The Tientsin correspondent of the Stand- and wrote on the 1st of December :-The past month has not brought any change in the outward mails from home. My cable message of last montli was based upon a notification received from the Postmaster General in London, that from the 3rd of November an English bag for letters and postcards would be despatched vid Siberia daily, and sent to Chefoo and Shanghai. So far as Tientsin and Pekin aro concern. ed, they might just as well go to the moon Suez. Communication or come round
with Chefon, at all times doubtful, in the Winter ceases. altogether. If the postal authorities at home will only realise that the Siberian Railway passes through Tien tain to Pekin, and that mail bags from Europe are arriving here every day from all other quarters but England, the absur- dity of taking the bags off the train at Dalny and sending them to Chefoo will be appar- ent. This, however, is all that we can un- dorstand from the notification, and up to the present British subjects only receive such desultory letters as by some means get enclosed in the Russian bags, and come to the Russian Post-office here. The German residents are not only getting their corres. pondence in their own scaled bags arriving here daily, but they are receiving the Lon- don daily papers three and four weeks ahead of us, and last wook they were reading English papers of November 4. At the time we were thankfully receiving ours of October 15. This would be funny if it was not exasperating. The result is that British residents who have for ten or twenty years ordered their papers and magazines out from Mudie's are now placing their orders with the German Post-office, which undertaken to pass them on to newsagents in Berlin who receive the London papers daily, and will transmit them direct, viâ Siberia. Eng. lieh readors, therefore, are being driven to get their papers through foreign hands simply and solely because the authorities in London are too apathetic, apparently, to rise to the occasion.
