solation offers itself to those who are enduring climatic miseries in town, and that is that they are probably better off than their friends who are away on os tensible pleasure journeys. What the weather is like may be judged from the fact that in Scotland grouse shooting has been suspended over a great part of the country, the fruit harvest has been entirely ruined by rain and heavy gales, and from the seaside resorta poo- ple are cutting short their holidays and returning home, in despair at the con- tinued cold wet. For the temperature is deplorably low, and at night summer clothing is quite out of place. A sum- mer holiday when one cannot lounge comfortably out of doors seems too much like a piece of practical irony to be ap preciated.

To increase the depression of the time the list of accidents among holiday- makers seems to be longer than usual. Day after day the papers publish ac counts of two or three fatalities, most of them due, it is true, to the well-known thoughtlessness of the seaside visitor. Then one turns to the reports of Con- tinental resorts and finds that moun- taineering disasters are more numerous and tragic than in former Alto-
years. gether those whose thoughts are bent towards holidays have great cause for depression.
Flippant persons allege that the wor ries of an admittedly unsatisfactory year are a judgment upon us for listen- ing to the blandishments of Mr Cham- berlain on the subject of tariff reform. Discussion still rages unabated on this difficult problem, but there is a differ- ence. For whereas at the outset the 'man in the street' and those from whom he derived bis-inspiration spoke in & con- fident tone, it has lately dawned upon

One may imagine the police courts to become in the near future popular resorts of the Upper Ten, who will with difficulty suppress their emotion while
an unsympathotic constable reads out the list of previous convictions against. some blue-blooded misdemeanant,
The servant question is ever with us, and a new phase became apparent the other day when a gentleman was anm-- moned for omitting to take out a license for a male servant. His defence was that he had been unable to get female servants, and the man was in his service
as if male housemaid. This was a novel idea which did not serve to exculpate bim in the eye of the law, but from some correspondence which followed in the newspapers it became evident that. he had many sympathisers, and the man-housemaid is much more common than would have been believed. Several of the correspondents stated that they had all their housework done by a man- servant, and that he did it just as well, and more amenable to discipline-than the exceedingly independent damsels who nowadays condescend, at times when it suits them, to perform the duties of Abigail.

Between the hours of 12 and 6 a.m. yesterday, a thief gained entrance by climbing up the water pips on to the verandah and entered the room of a boarder named Mrs Walters, Mrs Walters was asleep at the time, and when she woke in the morning she dis.
