We hope the correspondent who supplied the following information to the N. 0. Daily News was better informed than the one who, on the 20th ult., predicted war in a few days :—A - well-informed correspondent in the North writes that. there is now no immediate prospect of a war between Russia and Japan, but thore 1267 is reason to think that the Russian military authorities in Manchuria are anxious to forco a war on Japan in the autumn; but it is a matter for, the politicians to decide whether they will be allowed to do so or not. Russin is still strengthening her position in Manchuria and towards the Yalu by collecting stores at Lianyang and Fenghuangcheng, and improving the roads, etc. There was only a small garrison at last reports, and a small party of reservists in plain clothes, but with their rifles, at Yong Ampho, where Colonel Dessino, the brother of our General Dessino, is in charge. A 18an Francisco telegram says:--MIS Whiting, wife of the well-known Captain in the United States Navy, died hero to-day from small-pox.-Commenting on this, the Manila Cubleners saya :-Mra Whiting has a sister, presumable in the Philipines. She is the wife of Lieutenant Dougherty, of the United States Army. Mra Whiting. was a Misa Afong. She was one of the famous family of Honolulu. She was mar- ried to Captain Whiting about ten years ago. He was in Honolulu with his ship when be met Miss Along and wooed her. A year ago he finished duty there as Naval

commander, in charge of the station for a year or more, Captain Whiting is a man approaching 60 years of age, and his wife, who met Fuch distres ful end in San Francisco, was about 40. She was the daughter of Ah Fong, a Chinese merchant who emigrated to Honolulu about. 40 years or more ago. He married there a young woman; of mixed Portuguese and native blood, and had by her two sons and eleven or twelve daughters. A decade ago good ho settled on his wife and children a deal of property and returned to China. He now lives in Macao, out of reach of the
