A TRAVELLING ISLAND.
In a recent address before the Ameri can Geographical Society Elmer L. Cortholl showed a map of the larga island just a little north of the Argentine city of. Rosario, in the Parana River. The island has for years been moving down the stream, narrowing the passage between it and the city. The fact that the island has moved from its old position will not appear So strange when the phenomenon is ex- plained. It seems after all to be a simple matter. The vast body of water coming down the Parana impinges apon the wide northern front of the island, and tears away great masses of earth from the banks, carrying the sand and other detritus away from the northern shore. The island so obstructs the current that an eddy is formed on the south side of
▼
the land inass, and into this eddy most of the earth that is torn away fo
the
Dorthern bank is carried and deposited
against the south shore in this quiet
part of the waters; so that while the north side of the island is constantly wearing away, the southern ehuru is being built up and extended, and thus the island is gradually travelling down the stream. The engineering problem does not seem to be a very difficult one. It in proposed to protect the northeru bank so WIRE that it cannot be further eroded by the current. Of course, if this bank is kupt intact there will be no earth to carry. around to the southern shore, and that part of the island will remain in its pre- 1267 sent position.

A new Bar and Billiard-room, as well as a Concert Room, are connected with the Hotel and there is ample room for Dancing.
The Hotel is beautifully situated on a high hill and commands a full view over the mainland, the Bay, and the Island.
Weihaiwei is noted for its scenery, healthy and cool climate during the Summer. There are several fine bathing beaches, good walks, and there is also good fishing to be had in the Bay.

The first box I took did me a lot of good, and I improved with overy dose I took, until now, after taking three. boxes, I can safely say I am thoroughly 718 cured. THE TRANSFORMATION.'
Such was the experience of this charming comedienne, whose public reputation lends weight as well as interest to her words. Sho says that her Transformation is due to the pills. Readers will observe that it was the genuino Dr Williams' pink pills for pale people that cured her not a substitute, and the public. will do well to note that sub- stitutes never seem to have cured anyone. Anæmis, biliusness, consumption, decline, eczema, fits, gout, heart discaso, indigee. tion, kidney disorders, liver complaint, paralysis, and St. Vitus dance are anong the diseases they have cured. Ladies will rond with particular interest the strong recommendation of Miss Blanche Harcourt, wh restoration to her dramatic triumpha ahe attributes to the means named in the inte, ahove quoted from the South -Loreton I'vers.
