THE HISTORY OF INCANDESCENT LAMPS.
One of the minst satisfactory examples of the way
in which inventions grow and
produce new industries is, says Engineer. the ing, that of the ninnufacture of incandescent electric lamp. In 1841 a

specification was filed by Frederic do Moleyns, of Cheltenham, for a means of obtaining illumination by the use of an electric current and the incandescence of a platinum wire, aided by a falling stream of charcoal or plumbago particlos... There was a glass globe which could be exhausted. Incandescence was not, however, the only source of light, as there was provisjon for moving the platinum wires apart, and maintaining eitenit by a number of | minute, ares formed, between' the particles of falling carton. A dovico approximating more closely to the lamp of the present day was that invented by Mr J. W. Starr, of Cincinnati. A thin strip of graphite, continues Engineering, was held between two clamps the whole being suspended by a platinum wire scaled into a globe. This globe was blown on to the upper end of a barometer tube of more than 31 in. in height, and was filled with mercury in the usual way, thus producing a Torricellian vacuum. Current taken through the carbon conductor, hesting in to in- candescence, and passed through the column of mercury, which was included in the circuit. Mr. Mattieu Williams has given an interesting account of these enrly experiments, which date from as far back us 1846. It would appear from his state. ment that not only platinum but allöys of platinum and iridum were first tried. and abandoned. Experiments were then mado with many forms of cathon, including even burnt cane. The similarity between these experiments and those conducted so many years after by Edison will be apparent. All these forms were, however, abandoned in favour of hard gueretort carbon, which was cut into thin sticks. The apparatus was exhibited by Mr Williams in the Town Hall of Birmingham, And at the Midland Institute. It is said that the only difficulty not witli was duỡ to a slight volatilisation of the carbon, the brown film upon and its deposition as a lamp glass. Other inore recent inventions will, adds Engineering, bo within the memory of many of our readers. Elaborate devices of many kinds wore brought for ward, and it may be said that the practice of more recent years has been in the direction of simplification: in this respect progress in this field has followed the 457 course of most inventions leading to in-
dustrial processer,

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.
IS PASSING.
:
In sending to China un allotment of the Tenth Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, The Times' has afforded an exceptional opportunity to subscribe for the work on very advantageous terms. The prices in China are the same as the prices in London, and all charges for sea-freight and for landing and Customs charges are paid by The Timos. In addition to these concessions, arrangemouts were made with Messrs. Kelly & Walsh, Limited, to accep subscriptions on the monthly payment plan, and to receive payments month by month. Subscribers in this country aro therefore saved the trouble of making frequent small remittances home, and the books (and a book-stand if desired) aro brought directly to their homes, and delivered to them for a preliminary payment of only twenty dollars. So remarkable an undertaking could, in view of all the circumstances, only be possible temporarily, and could apply only to a limited number of copies. It is gratifying to know that a large number of subscriptions have been already received, many of them from the educated Chinese of Shanghai and the outports. But the time has now come when this offer must be withdrawn, after one more week. There is therefore no time to be lost by those who wish to purchase the National Library oể | Reference, complete and up-to-date, at the minimum price. The Tenth Edition of the Encyclopædia will be sold for

THE REVOLVING BOOKCASE.
It is a prime necessity of its very existence that the Tenth Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica should be a work of ample proporti ns, a great library in itself. This means'sholf-room, and shelf-room is not always available. But the especially constructed revolving bookcase of quartered oak, minimises the space occupied, and the volumes arrange themselves in it so that they can easily be reached. A limited number of revolving cases has been sent from London especially for subscribers in China.

Prices, order forms and Prospectuses may be obtained on application to Kelly and Walsh, Liinite.
The Encyclopædia Britannica 10th Edition, 35 Large Quartos. 26,000 Articles, 2,000 Contributors, 31,000 Pages,
614 Plates and maps, 11,400 Illustrations, › 40,000,000 Words of Text.
CASH PRICES THE SAME IN
CHINA AS IN LONDON.
IN
In order to effect a quick distribution of the 10th Edition, The Times offers the work in China at London prices, sea-freight and landing charges paid as far në Shanghai or Hongkong. Cheques should be made payable as follows :—
To Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, to credit of. H. E. Hooper, for either of the following amounts:-
For the Cloth Bindi
For the Half Morocco Binding..
For the Three Quarter Morocco Binding
$340
$415
$450
(This Binding is recommended both for its durability and beauty For the Full Morocco Binding,
$580
Note: The foregoing prices can apply only to the first impression of the New Volumes which The Times has prepared in order to bring the original 24 volumes of the Encyclopædia Britannica up to date. An extraordinary demand for the Sup- plement has made it possible to offer the 35 volumes for considerably less than the prices at which they can be sold hereafter. More than 30,000 persons at home who already possessed the early volumes have subscribed for the supplement, almost all of them in advance of its publication, so that The Times was enabled to make one consecutive run on the presses, and thereby to effect a large reduction in manufactur ing cost. Subscribers in China are for the moment, on exactly the same footing a subscribers in England, but orders should be registered promptly, as it will not be possi le to guarantee indefinitely the acceptance of orders in China at the London prices with the additional concession of free carriage from London to Shanghai and Hongkong.
MONTHLY PAYMENTS.
H
The convenient and woll approved system of acquiring the Encyclopædia Britannica by monthly payments has been tried by Tho Times, with great success, in all parts of the world, and it will now be extended to China. By this plan the subscriber pays $29 down, and $20 each inonth, on given day, but he receives the entire set of 35 volumes upon receipt of the preliminary payment of $20. The number of monthly payments will vary according to the binding desired, as follows:- $20 down and. 17 payments of $20, for cloth.
$20
$20
21. 23
$20, for Half Morocco.
$20, for Three-quarter Morocco.
This is the special Times binding, and can be recommended). $20 down and 24 jayments of $25 for the Full Moroce binding (This binding is the best and the most beautiful and is as fine a binding as it is possible to make).
By arrangement with The Times, Messrs Kelly & Walsh, L., have been appointed agents for the Encyclopedia, and are authosed to accept subscriptions, at Shanghai and Hongkong. Specimen volumes in the different bindings may be examined at Kelly & Walsh, Ld., and payments will be made to then each mouth, or for cash in full ow.
