BOVRIL ISN'T DEAR,
in fact, value for value, it is one of the cheapest drinks and one of the most economical foods that can be obtained. A cup of hot Bovril costs less than a drink of whisky, and while giving a more gonuine and lasting warmth than the latter, contains, in addition, the nutritive prin. ciples of beef worth many times its cost.
Old fashioned beef tess and meat ex- tracts, whether known as such, or disguised under more pretention modern names 'contain none of the NUTRITIVE pro-
perties of beef, Baron Liebig himself admitted this facf; there is not a doctor to day disputes it. Used as a nourishment Meat Extract is probably the most ex. pensive articlo one can buy. Bovril one of the cheapest.

Mr H. F. Lawford K.C., who appeared for the defence, contended that Mr Do- herty, although as anxious as anyone to fire guns at our enemies, and defeat the commercial enterprise of America, was irresistibly impelled to play lawn tennis. This was because he was a twin. The pre- cedent established by the Renshaws, the ODOWN No. 1 (GROUND and TOP Baddeleys, and the Allens placed this G FLOORS)-Storing capacity about beyond dispute. seriously proposed to alter the name of the pastime to Lawn Twinnis.. He wished further to point out that, frivolous as the game might be held to be, it was at any rate not to be confounded with ping-pong. The Bench, taking the last-mentioned circumstance into consideration. decided
not to pass sentence of death; and the prisoner was instead sentenced to be enrol led in the Rottingdean Rifle Club. He left the court in the custody of Mr Kipling and Mr Harmsworth,
DR W. G. GRACE ON HIS TRIAL. On the Bench: Mr A. G. Steel, K.C., Mr Andrew Lang, Mr A. J. Webbe, Mr. John Ball, junior, Mr N. L. Jackson, and Mr Thomas Morris. The following cases were heard :-
William Gilbert Grace, 54, doctor, was charged with the heinous offence of per petual youth.
Sir Robert Giffen, who appeared for the prosecution, said that the prisoner persisted in getting younger every year, to the con- fusion of all statistics, and the despair of honest bowlers. Only a few days ago the prisoner, in defiance of all consideration for the feelings of the young men who were playing and looking on, had made his two- hundredth century in first-class cricket; while his attacks on the wickets, of his, enemies were continuous and successful.
Mr. L. B. W. Schooling, who said that he was an actuary employed by the Royal Glob Insurance Company, stated that that Company had been founded with a capital of 50,000 runs to insure cricketers against making ducks. They refused, as a rule, to take any one over forty-five. The prisoner was an exception..
Dr Andrew Gaukrodger, medical officer for Sydenham, said that since the prisoner came to reside in the neighbourhood, he had set such an example of health that the incomes of the general practitioners in the district had fallon at least 50 por cent.
Sir James Crichton Browne stated that

Mr Wullie Park, manufacturer of golfing implements, said that the usual age at which a mau turned from the frivolity of RICHMOND cricket to the sairiousness of gowf was thirty-seven. They still waited to take the It wasn' prisoner's order, but in vain, fair to trade.
Mr Melchizedek Jones, a solicitor, re- presenting the family of Old Parr, speaking for the defence. stated that old as that impressive figure had grown to be there was no evidence that he ever gave up cricket.

TRIAL OF FRENCH SUB- MARINES.
An Attack on Ironclads, The Paris correspondent of The Standard wrote on the 12th ult.:-It is announced that the Naval Manoeuvres which took place at Cherbourg yesterday, and in which the submarine torpedo boats were employed to protect the port against an attacking fleet of cruisers, were very successful and conclusive. The submarine vessels suc- ceeded in attacking the ironclads, which were at anchor and under steam, without being discovered, and it is claimed that the Maneuvres proved that a fleet blockading Cherbourg could not escape the attack of those vessels, no matter what precautions they might take.
Though no detailed reports of the Manœuvres have been published, special note is made of an exploit performed by thu submariuo boat the Francais. This vessel, whilst navigating at a distance of six métres below the surface of the water, suddenly became aware that it was ap- proaching a war vessel by hearing the uoise of its propellers in the water. By means of its periscope, the submarine located the ironclad, and suddenly discharged a dum- my torpedo at it, which struck the vessel
near the engine-room. The torpedo being
charged with phosphorus and calcium, a jet of flame warned those on board the ironclad of what had taken place. The submarine then plunged to a depth of seventeen métres, "passed beneath the iron- clad, and again launched a torpedo at it from the other side. The Francais then came to the surface and revealed itself to

the ironclad, which was the Bouvines, and ENGLAND and
which, in actual warfare, would certainly
have been destroyed.
By curious coincidence, the submarine boat, the fianbet No. 2, was offered for sale by auction at the Docks of St. Quen, near Paris, this afternoon. Though the French Government did not adopt M. Goubet's type of bost, there is no doubt but that it was due to this engineer's persistent efforts that the problem of submarine navigation was taken in hand, and, if not solved, has, at all events, been brought to a pitch which was not dreamed of in 1887, when M. Goubet made his first public experiments. It was in that year that his first boat was launched nt Cherbourg, and M. Goubet and his foreman went down beneath the sew in it. A great deal was written about the boat at the timo, and later, when the French Government built the Gymnote, the Morse, and the Narval, it was found that the State engineers had profited by several of M. Goubet's ideas. That gentleman, however, it is to be fear. ed, has not derived much pecuniary advantage from .hig invention, to-day's sale was an enforced one. Only two persons soriously bid for the vessel. One of them was an engineer, and the other a dealer in antiquities. The two gentlemen, however, entered into a spirited competition for the possession of the sub- marine, and from a thousand francs tho price was run up to forty-five thousand francs, at which sum it was knocked down to the engineer.
and
The Goubet No. 2, it is estimated, cost six thousand pounds to build. It is not known to what purpose the engineer pro- poses to put the vessel, but it was reported a few days since that a Swiss speculator intended purchasing it with the object of transferring it to the Lake of Geneva. It was his intention to use it for making ex. cursions to the bottom of the lake, the public being admitted on payment of a
fee,
Some people are weakly and emaciated, yet they are not, to say, sick. Their appetites are fair, they cat good, wholesome food, but they cannot gain flesh. The face is, their nutritive functions are deficient. The food may even bo digested, but is not properly assimilated. With loss,of, or lack of, sufficient flesh there is a corresponding decline-of-strength and vigour. Comeliness of form is dependent upon graceful curves, plumpness, rather than upon angles. Bony prominences, hollow cheeks and eyes, are not pleasing to the sight.

THE BANK ROBBERY.
Opening of the Investigation.
The investigation into the charge against Lam Kai Ting, a shroff employed behind the cashier's counter of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, was opened this afternoon at the Magistracy, before Mr Hazeland, MY G. C. C. Master (Messrs Johnson, Stokes, and Master) prosecuted for the Bank, and the prisoner was undefen- ded. In explaining the nature of the charge, which is one of einbezzling the sum of $4,412.50, Mr Master said the accused was one of a number of shroffs employed in the Bank. He was not usually employed at the cashier's counter, but on the 2nd October Mr Sharp, cashier, had utilised him. In the cashier's department there were three cashiers, several shrofts being under each European. The mode of pro- cedure when money was paid in was briefly as follows. Customers, or their servants, come to the cashier's counter of the bank, bringing with them the pay-in book con- taining an entry of what is to be paid in, whether it is cash, and if cash, whother it is in gold, silver, ote., or whether it is pote or drafts. The Shroffs are responsible for the cash, which is not received by the European Cashier, the shroff taking it and after counting it and comparing it with the amount set forth in the pay-in book, he initials the foil of the book and presents it to the cashier, who takes the foil, puts it under a weight
and dosk,
stains the counterfoil. If cheques are paid in as well as cash the cashier deals with them himself. The Chinese initialing is put on to check which particular shroff has received the cash. In order to count the money, the shroff takes it down to a room in the lower portion of the building, where six shroffs sit at a long table. The notes are taken there, counted, and entered in the

Robbers are gradually becoming more and more audacious, as is evidenced by the number of robberies during the day. Rob bers are becoming men of the day as well as men of the night.
