Largely though it bulks in the publis ye as one of the most palpable evidence of the Colony's progress and material prosperity, comparatively little is known of the rise to its present affluent position of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Co., Limited. This is not at all astonish ing, when one is regard to the cling ing nature of the European populations Cleage, constant change, is the essential characteristic of the place, and in some respects it is buneticial, for its waste tissue is replaced periodically by fresh drafts of young zuen, who bring to it the necessary impetus of new ideas and rejuvenating vigour which keeps it alive cotomiorcially. But change is not con ducive to strong memories. It is n fact that the average individual is lamentably ignorant of the fifty years prior to his owa subluunty existence; and, in like manner, the average resident in Hong kong knows comparatively little of the Colony's history and less about its lend. ing institutions.
