CORPORAL PUNISHMENT.
The Truth About Lea-Corp. Giles' Case.
In consequence of the serious statements made by "Disgusted' in a letter to the China Mna, dated 29th October, and the discussion and criticism which the allega- tions contained therein havo decasioned Among the public, we have thought it well to ascertain from the highest authority the trus facts of the case.
The man in question, Lance Corporal Giles of the Royal Welch Fusiliers was originally tried by Court Martial for strik ing a superior oficer on the 12th April. He was sentenced to six months' imprison went with hard labour? On 17th April he was admitted te Veturis Gul and, during his confinement the he was punished on thing becasions for breaches of prison disct- plin, but not at any time was he placed in dark coll.
On the 8th of Detoler, after being six ecks clear of report, he awanuited a War der ud attempted to asault a principal wander and for this offence he acceived 12 atrofies with the eat-o nine-tails, Medical
