That, all the same, the passing of a big storm of large area with the reminder to this Colony of no more than half a gala and very dirty weather, is a thing for which we ought to be grateful. That I have heard much praise given to the Acting Weather Prophet, for the reasonable warnings given by him of the great dragon's movements.

THE TYPHOON SIGNALS.

E pluribus unum writes to us - You will oblige a good many of your readers by publishing an explanation of the typhoon signals M used in this Colony. The state- mant of one of your contemporaries the other day that "a black cono, pointing upwarda, indicates a typhoon to the north ward, thu centro being within 30 miles from the Colony" is absurd.'

Our correspondent apparently undur stands that the quotation he gives is a neistake-a misleading mistake, but still s mistake-dee probably to the reren't change in the signals as used by the Hongkong Observatory. As it happens this is the firs: occasion on which it has been necessary to use the typhoon signals, and in spite of the publication and frequent republication: of the signals the general public continues to display that profound ignorance of them which is always expected of the great B. P. The handiest form in which we have seen the signats published is in a circular sent out many months ago, at the commencement of what is known as the typhoon season,'
