WHATEVER may be the reason for it, there can be no doubt that the drainage system of the colony has not come with- in a long way of the degree of perfec=" tion which it was expected to attain when the separate system was intro- duced. It may now pertinently be asked whether the result has justified the adoption of that system. That the aoloay, from a sanitary point of view, is in a better position at the present time than that in which it was a decade ago, may be readily admitted. But when during a period of dry weather, people find the drainage question continually brusting itself upon them through the medium of their olfactory nerves, it i not possible to avoid coming to the conclusion that something more re- quires to be done before it can be said that the drainage system of the colony ia in a satisfactory state. By unscien- tific people, the emanations from sewers are regarded as not only disagreeable but positively dangerous.
