It is we believe, a fact that the value of the sugar in its refined state now daily turned over in Hongkong is no less than $20,000 o takmg 200 working days to represent a year, the annual output of refined sugar herol amounts in value to ebont 50,000,000! Having said so much to indicate the magnitude of this local industry, it may be interesting and useful to give a brief sketch of its history. The first refinery in Hongkong sablished about fifteen years ago at Bust Point by Mr. W. MasGregor Smith, He had to gmp. ple with dificulties in carrying out the undertaking which would probably bave floored the majority of men. The old Hongkong Mint Laving proved a Gnar- cial failure, Mr MacGregor Smith made cartatt offers respecting the buildings to the then Governor, Sir R. G. Mac- Donnell, which were accepted, and the work of converting the Mint into a sugar refinery was commented Eventually this was done, but then caice along trul of patience, tact and energy, in finding markets for the sugar. Japan and North China were at first the only markets, but the demand grew but slow- ly, and, if the industry was to be success- ful, other markets had to be found. India was then tried, but here a strong prejudice on the part of the natives to use augar that was supposed to have been parifed by the use of animal charcoal, inilitated against ita introduction, In the end those erroneous ideas were re- moved, and little by little the demand for the sugar refined here grew B considerable amount of capital, tów, ever, having to be suph to keep the article in the murket. As soon as the tide turned to success B attempt was made to combine the cul- Livation of sugar with the refining bust- ness. The Indo-Chinese Sugar Com- pasy was accordingly established with s capital of $2,000,000. This effort unfortunately brought anencial disaster to all concerned, and the difficulties.
