It would be necessary, in fact, to fortify the whole of the hills above us and to fill the forte with troops, otherwise it would be possible for an enemy, which had eluded or defented our fleet in those waters, to land a few thousand men at Aberdeen or elsewhere on the island, occupy the hills over our beads and hold the town and harbour at its mercy. The real danger to be guarded against here in time of war is that of number of the enemy's war vesels teaming into the harbour and doing as they pleased with all English vessels found here and with the city itself It is against such a danger as this that the naval and military authorities here are constructing and devising defences. Batteries are being erected on the beat sites for commanding the entrances to the harbour, and are being armed with heavy guns. Only a week or two ago soine mine experiments were also carried out in the Ly-ee-moon Piss to determine the best means for defending the harbour with these concealed and terrible instruments of destruction. These mines. alone would most likely keep hostilo vessels at a respectful dig.
