It is not so very surprising, when one calmly considers the gross eng gerations and unfair inferences drawn By Sir John Smale in his printed ful-

pere of the plunder or the advocates for maintaining the abuses. Sir John, by his acknowledged indiscretion and us fairness, set a great portion of the sensi ble European public here against him; and, finding that his efforts were te garded with dissatisfaction, he posed na a philanthropic minority who was fight ing the self-raisod dragon single-handed against the Executive and a hardened public conscience. It is, however, a little surprising to find a journal with the reputation of the London Spectator dealing with this subject in the fashion which appears from an article in its issue of the 29th April Isst, That writer speaks of a system of slavery which consigns boys to bondage, and girls to something worse, but makes no meation whatever of the large numbers of girls who, as bousehold servants, form by far the largest number of persons ne tually benefited or cursed, as the case may be by the custom so blindly objected to Again, the article refers to those who advocate, and those who deprecato reform. Who those are who have deprecated reform in this mattor are not mentioned and it ap pears to us that the writer in the Lon den weekly would find some difficulty in naming them. And yet these facts are given as admitted by all and clearly proved! If it be meant that any ex- treme mensures of reform, touching the question of domestic servitude, such as those wildly advanced by Sir John 20 The publication of this issue commenced Suiale, were pronounced unreasonable, at 7:45-p.m.
