HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1882. A DISCUSSION has taken place in Shanghai, during the last week or two, which strongly recalls to mind the points concerning Education which have so frequently been raised in this Colony." The lack of a Public School for boys in the Model Settlement has beep telt doubtless for many years, and the want is a growing one. While this wat bas pressed upon those concerned, however, the supreme difficulty has invariably pre seated itself as it is bound to do in every small comity which aims fairly high in matters of dueation-vis, the Gimited number of scholars and the consequent proportionately high rate at which good tuition can be obtained, Residents of Hongkong who have watched the various educational efforts in this Colony will at once understand what is meent, as they must have Been the problem more then once demon- strated by experience. It must be borne in mind, at the same time, that the con- ditions which govern Shangbai and Hongkong in this matter are vary dif ferent from those which obtain in my Community at Home.
