It may seem to be inconsistent thus to approve of long sentences, and at the same time to complain of the expense and trouble involved; but it may be re-. membered that prisoners who were re- lieved of a portion of their sentence under the old deportation arrangement, were sent out of the Colony, and it has never 11 am-Auction of Sundries at Govern been shown that they returned in any

large proportion of enser, The Supreme Court Judges, when sentencing a prisoner in an aggravated esse, are în the habit of informing him that it will be for the good of the Colony that he bo kept out of harm's way for a long period; but the moment that prissner tokes up his position and assumes his place in the happy family under Su perintendent Tonnochy, he does so with the distinct understanding that it is for the interest of the community and him- self that his six years' confinement shall be reduced to four. On the score of expense, this may be a good system; but if long sentouses are supposed to be a good thing, surely there is reasonable objection, upon the same principle, to cutting them so very short after they are passed. As we have said, under the old system, the criminal was deported, and he was out of harm's way, so for as this Colony was concerned, for a certain time after his liberation, if not permanently. A case that appeared in our last night's Police intelligence, may serve as an illustration of the present system. It was that of a Chinese lad, twenty years of age, who was committed for trial at the Supreme Court for the alleged larceny of $65; and this is the history of the prisoner as given by an officer of the prison –

We noted yesterday that the ranks of the active thieves were being reinforced, and we now learn that midnight alarms and attempts at burglary are becoming common. This state of things naturally induces us again to look at the treat- ment of criminales subject which, formerly discussed almost to tatters, has for a considerable time lain dormant, or almost so. Crime in its most audacious forms has happily not been so disagree- ably prominent of late, although the fact that the severer measures for re- pression are almost a dead-lettor leaves
