is intended to occupy a position, as regards China and the neighbouring countries, somewhat similar to that which has been filled in India by tho Calcutta Review. The great degree tention that bar been bestowed of late years Upon
the investigation of Chiness literature, antiquities, and social
and social developments, to say nothing of linguistic studies, has led to the accumulation

d in the first number of the Keview by paper highly ereditable to their respective authors.
In a paper on Dr. Legge's She King, by the Rev. E. J. Eitel, to which the place of bonour is deservedly given, an excellent Bommary is presented of the chronological problems and arguments involved in cou mexion with this important work, dome translations from Chinese novels and plays are marked by both accuracy and freshness of style; and an account of the career of the Chinese poet-statesman of the eleventh century, Sulung-p'o, by Mr. E. G. Bowra, is not only historically valuable, but is also distinguished by its literary grace. Beside noticea of new books relating to China and the Eaat, which will be a useful feature of the Review, it carried out with punctuality and detail, we are glad to notice that "Notes
