STEALING BASKETS.

Chun Akwal, a coolie, was charged with stealing pine bamboo baskets yesterday evening from one Fang Asing, a joss-stick maker.

P. C. No. 50, Alexander MaDongal, met defendant in Bonham Road last night. He was carrying the baskets, and as the coretable suspected something wrong he questioned the prisoner on the subject but could get no satisfactory secount from him of bow be became possessed of the baskets, It was afterwards found they were the pro- porty of a joss-stick maker who said he had lost a great many such baskets lately. Chun Achun, a coolte, pleaded guilty to atealing a rice pan from one LI Awing, a plumber. He said he was a coolle out of employment and he was forced to steal. He also admitted a former conviction during last year.

Prisoner was sentenced to two months' imprisonment with hard labour.

EUROPEAN SENT TO JAIL FOR PERJURT.

AKWAT .. Pora, $0.30-Defendant, who is a private in the Marinos, was sued by the plaintiff, a Chinese jeweller, for the above sum being the balance of the price of a ring bought for $9. Defendant swOTO be paid this balance in September last, and called as he witness Corporal Ruflin who swore to seeing the Chinaman receive money from the defendant on one day in that month. He saw a $5 note and some aliver pasa.

This alleged payment the plaintif fatly denied. The case bad been before the Commodore, who after enquiry refused to bave anything to do with It, and then plafatiff had been forced tuto Court where only he could get any romedy. The defendant, it was proved, said, when before the Commodore, that the ring was not gold, It was only washed with gold; that be had bought it for $450, whloh amount he had pald

The Master-at-arms on board the Fister Emanud gave evidence of the defendant admitting to the plaintiff on 2nd or 3rd November that he was due him a balance on the price of the ring of between $6 and $7, and he then promised to pay that amount at the Now Year. All Honor gave judgment for the amount $6.80 with costs, although, he said, he had no idea how the plaintiff was to get his money. did not know what it was for.

The Judge reminded the witness that, according to the version of both the plaintiff and defendant, there was no other tranzao. tou or dealings between them than the purchase of this ring, so that it was impos- sible he could have seen the money he stated pass between them. He certainly did not believe bis evidence. He believed he had
