We have received a copy of "An Inder to Dr. Williams' 'Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language,'" by Mr James Achosen, I. M. Customs, Canton. The book, which is clearly printed, is intended as an aid fo Students of Chinese in using Williams' largo work, and, from the painstaking carefulness shown by the modest ponng author, we should think that this landsblo object has been attained. Mr. Acheson, in his Preface, says “Every care has been | taken to make the references as correct as

possible. Very little pretension is made to Boisntifie securacy in other respects, and short comings may be discovered, but it is yet anticipated that the book will attain its principal object and assist students of Chinese in meeting a widely-acknowledged difficulty."
