Ws notlos that the Supreme Court is being Atted with hot-water pipes. It is high time this was done, as a more wrotchedly cold -place could not well be found; bosidos, considering the amount of public business transacted within its walls, the question of e trifling expense should not be allowed to Interfere with the comfort of those who are compelled sometimes against their will to attend. The Police Court is also open to Improvement in this respect. Probably the magistrates, who are particularly required to keep cool as well as clear heads, find this state of the atmosphere of their official residence conducire to this end. Perhaps, on the other hand, they are simply victims to the parsimony or official slowness of the British Government.
OWING to some further disagreement among the members of the Opera Company there was no performanos on Saturday evening, although the public were not apprised of the fact until some ten minutes or a quarter of an hour after the performance should have commenced. It would be well if in future the Company would settle their differences one way or the other a few hours before the time for commencing their per- formances, so that, in case of a decision ziot to play, the public may be saved the inconvenience of preparing for, and prossed- ing to, the Theatre. The Company have certainly exhibited a singulas lack of courtesy and proper feeling in the matter —a groumstance which is all the more noticeable seeing the extensive patronage and kindly consideration that baa boen

We shall conclude, therefore, by expren- sing our firm opinion that there is no meet to despair with regard to the satisfactory arrangement of the question pending before the Chinese Government, and by urging that all portble support he given to the Olyphant enterprize, which has made and continues to make so many sacrifices for the purpose of fulfilling its engagemanta with the Poravian Government. It must also be remembered that Masara. Olyphant & Co., us polated ont by their agent in the note addressed to the Supreme Govern ment, havenot yet received any subsidy for the two voyages made by one of their steamers from Chica to Peru and vies versa, and that the difficulties put in their way, besides prodhoing a delay which we all regret, have also entailed heavy losses on them, which they patiently bear, animated by the desire to carry out an enterprize which whilst promising a sure remuneration is slao destined to save the National Agriculture from the rain with which it is threatened, through the want of one of the chief elements necessary for lis development and prosperity,
