For the last three wocks the keepers of pigs, and the goatherds who daily take their looks up the hill sides to pasture, have. boon thrown into consternation and alarm by reports of some powerful and ferocious animal being at large in the colony. At first it appears the brute contented itself with the car dog of the country, and had it rid the colony of all these posts and then disappeared the animal might have been looked on as a benefastor, but, growing bolder with impunity, it developed a taste for pig. Several pigs were carried off from the shanties on the Shan-ki-wan road. The place next visited was Ship-street, at the back of the Wanchai Pier and godown promises, from which no less than three squeakers disappeared in one week. Ox one occasion the animal was hunted up to a place near the summit of the Peak over- looking Deep Water Bay, between Aberdeen and Stanley, where the remains of a pig

animal, whatever it is, would appear to be of a cowardly, timid nature, or particularly well fed, as, on being disturbed by some grasscutters on the top of the hills abovo the Whitfeild Folioe Station, it made no attempt to turn on the women, who allege that they threw several grass carrying poles at the brute, one of which striking it on the back onased it to make of. The women describe the animal as red, with black stripes and a long tail; this can be nothing else than a tiger, and an opportunity thus acanre for our legal Nimrode which they may not have again for many years to come."

We have to acknowledge receipt of the "Chronicle and Directory for Chins, Japan, and the Philippines" for 1879, issued from the Daily Press office. As wo have more than once remarked, the com pilation of a Directory is not the essy and amusing task which some may fandy it to be, and it therefore becomes a reviewer of such a work to regard the amount of correctness attained and the mass of information collected, rather than to quibble over the mistaken made or the insignificant lack of some. thing that may be considered desirable. The Directory before us is one of the most respectable specimens of the genus, which can be found in the Fast, so far as outward appearance and bulk are considered: ita get-up is very credit. able to the establishment from which it emanates, and its contents show that the publishers have not failed ge to improve the work in accordance with the accumulated experience and friendly criticisms of past years De
