His Excellency intimated the possibi- lity of a special naturalisation law being passed in this Colony. Sir Rutherford Alcock notified in 1868 that, in regard to Chinese claiming to be British subjects in China, no protection would be granted to the same unless they modified in some way their Chinese costume. The Chinese costume is a well adapted to the climate in this part of the world, that we shall be sorry to see it altered in any way to the European model. As a sort of guarantee of their bona fides, however, Chinese taking out naturalisation papers might be reason=, ably required to cut off that cumberous and troublesome appendage--the pig tail. The queue was at one time, and is still. regarded as a badge of subjection to the reigning dynasty of China, and there would be some amount of inconsistency in Chinaman, cong tinuing to wear the sign of his Ch nese nationality after he had become a British subject. The Chinaman who would not sacrifice his tail for British nationality is probably not deserving of it, We would not advocate the

It is also a badge of servitude, imposed upon the Chinese by the Manchu dynas. ty, and Mr Giles says that when the natives of Amoy and Swatow were finally compelled to adopt the dis tasteful fashion, they concealed the badge of their subjection beneath cotton turbans, the use of which has survived- to the present day.
On the whole we think Chinese becoming British subjects will do well to get rid of the queue, even if the British Government does not object to the admission of tailed individuals into the nation. There is also one other reason why the tails should be con. demned. The naturalised Chinaman
