With the exception of those two we have heard of no accidente. The fire was com pletely mastered by 10 o'clock, although the engince continued playing for some time later. The origin of the fire is thought to be the spontaneous combustion of a quantity of table and bed linen which was stared in the upper part of the building. The godown"Truth." was used as a store-room and contained a anger quantity of wines and spirits. It is looked every night and the keys are in the posession of a European, so that it is hard to asign any other reason for the fire. THE F, AND O. Co.'s GODOWAS ON FIRE.”

The screw steamer Salisbury, which has been built by the Tyne Iron shipbuilding Company, has made her trial trip off the 8 Northumberland Coast. She is 287 feet in length, 34 6 feet in depth of hald. Her engines are of 86 and 64 inches diameter of gylinder, with 2-inch stroke, and have been constructed by the North-Eastern Marine Engineering Company, Sunderland, The vessel was taken along the measured mile in Whitley Bay, and afterwards to Newbiggin. The ongines worked without ach, and the mean speed attained on the test was 11 knots. She is intended for the East Indian and Ohlas trade.

One of the godowns belonging to the P. & O. Company caught fire last evening about "half past 7 o'clock. The alarm was given about quarter to B, and the various fire Sta tions were at once communicated with. The engines belonging to the Government and Volunteer Fire Brigades, the Fire Insurance Co.'s engine, and several band engines belonging to Chinese were got to work as quickly as possible, and shortly after 8 o'clock immense volumes of water were being thrown upon the burning building. A flight of stone steps outside the build- ing, which leads to the upper floor on the northern side, was found very convenient, and two or three streams of water were brought to bear upon the flames in this diroe tion, whilst others were directed both over and under the part of the building in which the fire was raging. About 20 minutes to 9 o'clock the devouring element had made an outlet through the roof and the flames boat. shot into the air, creating a glare which could be seen for a considerable distance.

In many cases the committee reported the existing system of working punkahs to be quite satisfactory. The chief fault found by the committees iny in the connection of the punkahs by ropes

To remedy this it was proposed to substitute bara of wood for the ropes, and this has been carried out in many barracks; yet this was no sooner carried out in accordance with the recommendations the Committee at the Dalhousie Barrack in Fort William than, although the punkana rigidly oon. acted worked with a steady swing, the men did not appear to like it so much as the old jerking motion.
