However, this is not the case, and we trust that not a stone will be left unturned to clear up this disgraceful affair. We rather twitted the police for the precautions they took some time back at Sand's Ship, night's affair only too clearly shows that when an attack was expected; but, last they were fully justified in doing then what they did.

A trifling ease which came before the Mixed Court yesterday (Sep. 19th) throws some light upon how erroneous and injurious notions on Chinese matters get spread about. A native journal, in reporting a recent trial, stated that evidence had been obtained from the accused by means of torture. The asoused was now confronted with the Chincse detective who, it was alleged, had been guilty of the torture. The prisoner said the detective merely-threatened to torture him, but he could produce us proof even of the use of the threat. The detective was, there- fore, exonerated from blame, and the reporter of the native journal was very properly cautioned not to again furnish false state- mente.

The boisterous weather experienced during Wednesday night and throughout the whole of yesterday (Sep. 19th) led to a general impression that a typhoon was blowing off the coast. The weather on Wednesday indicated that a storm was approaching, and it burst about midnight. The steamers that arrived reported having Kwok Chi Fun, who was convicted the experienced strong N.E. gales and heavy other day of having retailed samshu too, but had sustained no damage.
