We believe our contemporary is in error in stating that these fire ironolada have been purchased by the British Government. Only three of them, so far as our observation goes, have become British property, namely the Independ snoia, the Payki Sherrd and the Burgs Zafer. The above description of the Memdouhyish Hamidich is exactly that of the Mendouhyish, the well-known Turkish ironclad that has been operating during the late war in the Black See It was said the Turke had entered into an agreement with the Russians, zot to dispose of any of their ironclads to the British, and if this be so it is pretty cer tain that the Mendouhyich cannot yet be placed on the list of Her Majesty's Navy,

It containe no less than 166 names This large num ber is satisfactory as showing that the police authorities have been making Active efforts of late to abate what was rapidly becoming an intolerable nuisance, although perhaps it must at the same time be regarded as unsatisfactory aS evidencing a dourishing state of mendi- cancy in the Colony. The list fully fastides the frequent complaints that were made a few weeks ago of the beg- ging nuisance, Many of the 168 seem to have resided in Hongkong for years, but the length of residence of the majority latest of them here did not apparently exceed daya. A few were fined or imprisoned, but the bulk were deported. The nais- ance has, we believe, been shated con- Remarke siderably,
