The CHAIRMAN Bald: Gentlemen; the report, and accounts having been in your hands hoveral days, I hope you will allow me to consider them as read. I think we may be satisfied with the results of the last keen competition with which the Company has had to contend and which is still going on, that the Company continues to make steady progress, and the Directors are very glad, feeling, justified after the long pause, to again recommend the payment of a small dividend to the shareholders. We propose appropriating $20,000 of the profits to pay the balance of debt due to the Hongkong Fire Insurance Company, after which we sum of $26,000 to Her Majesty's Govern- ment, which is being, paid off by instal ments, and our interest account will there fore, owing to this, in future exhibit a considerable saving. The aurpense ao- count" you see is debited with 850,022.11, and this amount will be reduced to $30,000 if the appropriations proposed most with your approval. This account, as you are aware, arose not from any losses in the working of the Dooke, but from the sale of the Whampoa property, by which our position has greatly Improved, and I think wo are allowed to treat it as an Item of expenditure for the benefit of the Company, which may in fairness be distributed over several years.
