In the following Statements and Tables the Rates are given in cents, and are, for Lettere, per half-ounce, for Books and Patterna, per two ounces,
Newspapers over four ounces in weight are charged as double, trobis, &e, as the casa may be, but such papers or packets of papers may be sent at Book Rate. Two Newspapers must not be folded together one, nor must anything whatever be inserted except bout fide Supplements. Printed matter mar, however, be enclosed, If the whole be paid at Book Rate, Prices Our rent may be paid either as Newspapers or

N.R. means No Registration.
A packet containing two or more news- papers is not chargeable with a higher rate of postage than would be chargeable on book packet of the same weight.
A newspaper posted unpaid, or a packet of newspapers posted either unpaid or insufficiently paid, le treated as an unpaid or insufficiently paid book packet of the same weight
The postage must be prepaid either by un adhesive stamp, or by the use of stamped wrapper.
No newspaper can now be sent through the post a second time for the original postage. For each transmission a fresh postage in required.
Every newpaper must be posted either without a cover (in which unse it must not be fastened, whether by means of gum, wafer, sealing war, postage stamp, or otherwise) or in a cover entirely opan at both enda, so as to admit of easy removal for examination. If this rule be infringed the newspaper is treated as a letter.

The rule which forbids the transmission tarough the Post of any article likely to injure the contents of the Mail Bags or Boxes, or the person of any Officer of the Post Office is, of course, applicable to the Pattern Post; and a packet containing any thing the kind will be stopped, and not sent to its destination, Articles such as the following have been occasionally posted as Patterns, and have been detained as unfit for the Post, viz : Metal boxes, porce- lain and China, fruit, vegetables, bunches of flowers, cuttings of plants, spam, knives, scissors, needles, pina, pieces of machinery, sharp pointed instruments, samples of metals, samples of ore, samples in glass bottles,pieces of glass, aclds of various kinds, curry tomba, copper and steel en- graving plates, and confectionery of all kinds.
Communication with Batavia. The Netherlands India Packets leave Singapore fortnightly, and are fitted to the arrival of the outward P. & O. Mail from Europe.
The French Packte for Batavia wait at Singapore for the Packet from China and run fortnightly.
