MEN-OF-WAB, "

H. M. gunboat. U. S. corvette U. 8. gunbost Russian gunboat -

No. 4833-MAY 22, 1877.}

Chow Asing, a boy at the Boat-house, was recalled. He saw the child in the water first; he was taking in some towels from the bridge then. He ran back to inform the other people in the boat-house, and then met Mr Wilson to whom he told what he had seen.

Wong Asin was called-I am cook to Sergeant Kerr. At 11,30 my mastor told me to take the deceased, who was then playing down below, and I was told to take him upstairs. I did so, and I did not see him go down again. My atten- tion was first attracted to the child being in the water from eries I heard from the Chinese in the boat-house that a child was in the water. I then ran to tell my mis- tress. I went with my mistress, and I then Baw a boat picking up the ghild. The boat- man was dragging the child along the water with a boat-hook sticking, into the child's belt. I heard eries from Chinamen to the man in Court pick up the child into the boat." I do not think he could have heard the cries.

Dr L'Estrange, Surgeon in charge of the 28th Regiment, was called:-About p.m. on Sunday I was sent for, and when I got to the Wellington Barracks it was about 1.10 p.m. I saw the child there. I examined it, and found life was extinct.

There were no marks or bruises about the body, and the cause of death was drowning. Artificia! respiration had been adopted before I came, and I con- tinued it for about quarter of an hour. Every means was adopted to resuscitats life but failed. I was told that the child had breathed when taken ashore. I could form no notion as to how long the child had ceased to live..

The Coroner here observed that there was no evidence to show how long the child had been in the water before he was picked up by the boatman, nor was there sufficient proof for further action against the man.

LOCUSTS.

To the Editor of the "CHINA MALL"

Hongkong, May 22, 1877. SIMy friends in America write to me: to say that for the past five or six yesma large section of the United States, embrace ing the States of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Minesota-the great wheat and corn producing portions of the country-have been overrun with a species of locusts, called grasshoppers, the same plague that periodically infests the Philip pines. Some years since they devoured everything in the shape of vegetation, and the great problem of how to exterminate them" was the theme of discussion in every circle of society. The insects hatch out with the coming of vegetation each year, and continue their depredations until the frost, when they lay their eggs in the ground, and the next generation follow in the footsteps of their fathers.
