THE Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steam Oo's steamer Pawan, having been fitted with new cylinders, propeller-blades, &., went on a trial trip yesterday afternoon. Amongst thicae on board were H. E. the Ideutenant Governor, Messrs Koawick,
Belilos and Rolners, Directors of the Com pany; and Messen J. Russell, D. Robb, B.N., R. Deacon, and D. Gilles. The steamer laft the Canton Wharf at 3.30 p.m., and steamed to Castle Feak Bay, returning at half-past six. The alterations, it is said, have made a decided improvement in the speed of the vessel, she having made the run to Castle Peak in 1h, 22min., against the tide; returning against a stiff breeze in an hour and a half. It was given as the oplaton of an enthusiastic admirer of the big ship that her time came up to that of the Kinzhan to within a few minutes. This may or may not be so; but with a consumption of coal considerably less than formerly, it appears that the Powan has so increased her powers of
travelling through the water that the te now regarded as a serviceable reserve bost for the day trip. For the sake of the shareholders it is to be hoped that this antisipation may be fully realized.
