Boss Tweed has at length turned up in the Franklin, and was immediately on land- ing taken to Ludlow Street Jail in a close oarriago. The great corruptionist of the district of Columbia" as the papers have it, Boss Shepherd, has been declared insolvent. He was said to be the right-hand man of General Grant, and up to the time of his failure exercised great political inflaence. s was formerly President of the Board of Works and Governor. Out of very small resources he made a princely fortune (most offesholders do so), but his speculations in real estate proved, owing to the great de- prociation in value of property in New York, disastrous. These and other causas brought financial ruin on him as well se on others.
The extravagance of many of the Life Insurance Companies in New York has been attested by the revelation of the affairs of the Contincutal Life Insurance Company, which has lately gone into bankruptoy, Extravagant structures, rents, salarios, and other rookless expenditure tended to show and pretension, but the result is a heavy loss to polioy-holders, those on the Pacific coast alone counting up to a quarter of a million dollars. Some new revelations are promised THERMOMETER A.M.......... by the contention that has for some time existed between President Grant and Mr. Bristow, who it may be remembered, was compelled to leave the Cabinet, of which he was a very popular member. Mr. Bristow is, it is said, only awaiting the result of the recent campaign to explain his position and the connection of Grant and his supporters with whisky and other rings, and those engaged notoriously in plundering the Treasury-N.C.
