ALTHOUGH Hongkong may not feel called upon to express the vivid interest in Mr Cooper's exploration scheme which has been manifested by the Shanghai and Calcutta Chambers of Commerce, it does seem that a slight expression of opinion upon the matter from our own Chamber would be bath opportune and useful The watter lies in a very small compass. Either the endeavour to explore a west ern route to China is likely, if successful, to favourably affect the interests of mer chants at Cunton and Hongkong, or it is not. In the former case, the manifesta tion of interest in his proceedings would strengthen the hands of the Calcutta merchants and directly those of the Indian Government, to which he must be largely indebted for aid in his by no means easy undertaking. If, on the other hand, the mercantile community are of opinion that an attempt to open up a western route is likely to be mis hievous or useless, a few words to that effect would put the matter in a light less favourable to the Calcutts people and prevent a needless waste of mo-
