WE direct the special attention of our readers to the interesting communication to the N. . Daily News from a corres pondent at Chiukeang, which we repub- lish in another column. The event has perfectly vindicated the soundness of the ̈ views which we, and a large proportion of our fellow countrymen in China, have beld regarding the course our policy should take We congratulate. Mr Sew ard upon the very excellent taste and good sense he has shown in refusing to act as "mediator" between the Chinese and the justly-offended British authori ties. The words of the correspondent we quats are well descriptive of the po sitions of Great Britain and America in China. We trust that the good sense thus displayed will continue to prevail · with our American friends, who we ba lieve are sincerely annoyed at the dis aredit brought upon them by the so-cal- led "mission" to the west and the na- tural suspicion which has ensued on the part of others, as to every official act performed by their representatives.
