THE TENURE OF MACAO. Tas little brochure to which we madė allusion in our last issue, de having been published to prove our inconsistency, and to
vindicate the political status of Macao," calls for notice quite apart from its merits. It expresses in a tangible form the uneasy feeling on the part of the Macaoess which, evoked by the action of those who instituted proceedings against this journal, is energetic In condemning the policy which has thus raised the question of Portuguese right of possession. The three pages before us breathe no hostility to us except on political grounds,
and we therefore accept the challenge they put forth with the greater pleasure. We do not know who the writer may be though doubtless the initials "C. A. P.” will be familiar to some of our readers. We mention our ignorance of the writer for reasons sufficiently obvious to all acquainted with the caso pending between the government and this journal, and with which the terms of Portuguese tanure of Macao is collaterally connected. Hap pily, however, we are at perfect liberty to discuss Portuguese right or otherwise to that peninsula, as well as the general tenor of their policy in Chins, without let
to prevent the expression of the most or hindrance, no British law interposing plain-spoken opinions on those points
We desire to discuss the question raised by the writer of the pamphlet on his own
