ing remarks respecting the possibility of establishing a subsidiary silver coin- age"
Another means, therefore, and I believa the suggestion is a new one, offers itself to my mind. The catatilishiment of a mint for copper with a staff of assayers would ux- turally lead to a junction with the present Kung-ku, and a reform in the present pre- sent crude manner of assaying silver. Without, therefore, interfering with the the presont system of ayceo as a wholesale mediam, a subsidiary coinage of silver of a h, sy greeng with the prezent coir, the seal ourtent coin, of the lower Shanghai standard, could at once be issued

A tel coin must be a tael in weight and value precisely as is the erido lump of silver. We can think of but one suggestion which might partly meet the requirementa of the case-viz, to induce the Chinese government to jasne a crude coinage milar to the Siamese tical, which until lately consisted of a lump of metal of the exact weight, stamped with the govern ment mark. This would not enable us to dispense with the weighing scale, but would be of great practical use as doing away with the irritating and uncertain process of entting silver to make small would be so slight as to recommend is sums.
