IMPORTS AND EXPORTS.
SUMMARY OF STATISTICAL OFFICE REPORT ON THE TRADE
OF HONG KONG DURING THE YEAR 1940.
The aggregate trade of the Colony, as expressed in terms of local currency, incrensed by 21.9% during the calendar year 1940 us compared with the year 1930, and by 21.6% as compared with 1988.
Total imports of merchandise in 1940 umounted to a value of $752.7 millions (£46.8 millions) as compared with $594.2 millions (£30.5 millions) in 1939, and $618.1 millions (£38.2 millions) in 1988; whilst exports totalled $621.8 millions (£38.5 millious) in 1940 as compared with $533.4 millions (£32.8 millions) in 1939, and $511.9 millious (£31.7 millions) in 1938.
Imports of merchandise in 1940 increased by 26.7% as compared with 1939, and by 21.8% as compared with 1938; whilst exports increased by 16.6% as compared with 1939 and by 21.5% 86 compared with 1988.
Index numbers of wholesale prices in the Colony showed Th general average increase of 35.4% in 1940 as compared with 1989, and 32.7% as coupured with 1938.
