The aggregate trade of the Colony, as expressed in terms of local currency, increased by 21.9% during the calendar year 1940 as compared with the year 1939, and by 21.6% as compared with 1938.
Total imports of merchandise in 1940 amounted to a value of $752.7 millions (£46.8 millions) as compared with $594.2 millions (£30.5 millions) in 1939, and $618.1 millions (£38.2 millions) in 1938; whilst exports totalled $621.8 millions (£38.5 millions) in 1940 as compared with $533.4 millions (£32.8 millions) in 1939, and $511.9 millions (£31.7 millions) in 1938.
Imports of merchandise in 1940 increased by 26.7% as compared with 1939, and by 21.8% as compared with 1938; whilst exports increased by 16.6% as compared with 1939 and by 21.5% as compared with 1938.
Index numbers of wholesale prices in the Colony showed the general average increase of 35.4% in 1940 as compared with 1939, and 32.7% as compared with 1938.

OF HONG KONG DURING THE YEAR 1940.
