Not used during the year 1901.
Ventilation is as good as possible in a ship and the cubic space allowed to each patient is liberal. In an emergency over 110 could be accommodated giving each 600 feet on upper deck and 600 on lower deck. During the summer months ventilation of the lower deck is not good owing to winds being light or absent.

In addition to all there is an open space of 4 inches between the side and end of ship all round.
All the excreta, &c. pass straight into the sea so that only sweet water can ever collect in the bilges, which are ventilated by 2 up and 2 down shafts each 3 ft. 9 in. in circumference.
