November the staff of the Department was increased by the arrival of Mr. Joseph Niblett as Clerk of Works from England. At his own request the title of Mr. Niblett's Office was changed to that of "Clerk of Works" for the discharge of the duties, of which I have much pleasure in bearing testimony to his perfect efficiency.
The Grants of Land during the year consist of two lots of 5 acres each at the rate of $10 per acre for 21 years; two Marine Lots together containing 1 acre, 1 rood, and 30 perches at the rate of £84 per acre; and five Inland Lots, one of Class No. 1 containing 24½ perches at the rate of £160 per acre, three of Class A together containing 61 30 perches at the rate of £140 per acre, and two of Class No. 3 together containing 39 perches at the rate of $100 per acre.
These Lots, 2 Marine and 6 Inland, were granted to persons for 99 years. The two Inland Lots of Class No. 3 were granted in lieu of a Marine Lot resumed by Government for Public purposes.
The convict labour during the year has been employed on "Repairing the Roads and Streets" and "Miscellaneous Services". In the former of these Services the Chain-gang Convicts have made 13,363 days at 5 pence per day, £278 7s., and in the latter, 284 days at 1d. per day, £3 10s.
Together £283 17s. 11d.
